Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme

Healthier You LWTC MPUType 2 Diabetes

Over three million people in England already have Type 2 diabetes and, according to Diabetes UK, it’s estimated that as many as four million people could have the disease by 2025.

If current trends persist, one in every three people will be obese by 2034 and one in ten will develop Type 2 diabetes.

Diabetes already accounts for around 10 per cent of the annual NHS budget. This is nearly £10 billion a year. 90 per cent of people with diabetes have Type 2, which is largely preventable.

Every year, about 20,000 people with diabetes die early. Complications associated with diabetes include heart, stroke, kidney, eye and foot problems.

Proposed Solution

The proposed solution to this growing issue is Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme - a joint commitment from NHS England, Public Health England and Diabetes UK to deliver at scale evidence-based behavioural interventions for individuals identified as being at high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

The programme aims to delay or prevent onset of Type 2 Diabetes by supporting people to achieve a healthy weight, be physically active and adopt a healthy diet.

Roll-out of the programme began in 2016.  By 2020 the aim is to have up to 100,000 places per year available across England.
