Understanding Self Care for Life

SCWwebbuttonlg2016Understanding Self Care for Life is the theme of Self Care Week, the annual initiative which aims to raise national awareness of self care.

The Self Care Forum launches Self Care Week between 14 and 20 November; promoting improved awareness of services such as local pharmacies for minor ailments and advice about medications; flu vaccinations and improved management of long term conditions such as respiratory and heart conditions.

The Self Care Forum’s Annual Self Care conference, held in September 2016, highlighted the good news that life expectancy in the UK is rising. Today, at current rates, one in five boys and one in every three girls aged five will live to celebrate their 100th birthday. However, the bad news – while people are living longer, they are also spending more of their extra years in poor health.

Other key outputs from the conference included that people managing their health and engaging in prevention activities could save the NHS around £30 billion by 2022-23. Health experts are urging that health literacy is key to living a long and independent life and health education in schools is crucial.

NHS Solihull Clinical Commissioning Group is calling on people to observe a ten point check list they say can give them and the people close to them the best possible chance of staying well throughout the winter months, avoiding unnecessary hospital admissions and leading a healthier lifestyle.
